The Red Sox beat the Orioles in a rare Spring Training evening game, 4-0. Kyle Kendrick threw 4 more shutout innings after looking really sharp in the bullpen. As he warmed up in the bullpen, a fan from the Boston Sports Natives group wondered whether he would be rotation depth, long man or sneak into rotation. Red Sox coached obviously sent their young pitchers to watch the veteran’s preparation as they gathered on the bullpen wall. Also, preparing in the bullpen was Blake Swihart who went through drills pre game with the coaches.
Most of the action in the game happened in the first inning as Sox scored 3 after Marco Hernandez led off with a triple off the cf wall. The team looked sharp in the field. Hernandez and Jeff Rutledge made nice plays on ground balls and the team turned double plays to end the 4th and 5th. Allen Craig made a nice play on a foul ball as well.
Baltimore’s lone bright spot was Aneury Tavarez who had 3 hits, a stolen base and went first to third on a fielders choice. He was a rule 5 pickup from the Red Sox this year.
Some of the pictures show that the Red Sox have the same approach to enhancing the fan experience at Jet Blue as they do at Fenway. Fans can try out their pitching and batting, listen to a live band and just enjoy a warm evening. They even installed a red seat in RF like the Williams seat at Fenway.
Game time temperature was a chilly 77 degrees as the PA announcer reminded the crowd that temperature in Boston was 30 degrees and dropping fast.
